Updated October 2026
Citizens of 98 countries, including the US, UK, all EU member states, Brazil, China, India and Australia, do not need an Angola visa for tourism. They can stay up to 30 days per entry and 90 days per year under Presidential Decree 189/23. Travelers from countries not on the list apply for an Angola tourist visa through the SME’s e-visa portal or an Angolan consulate. Everyone needs a valid passport and a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
Who is exempt from the Angola tourist visa
Presidential Decree 189/23 of 29 September 2023 created Angola’s tourist visa exemption regime. Its annex lists 98 countries. Here is the full list as published, grouped by region:

Bilateral visa waivers
Separately from the 2023 decree, Angola has bilateral visa waiver agreements with several neighbors and partners. They include South Africa and Mozambique (since 2017), Namibia, Zambia, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Under these agreements, ordinary passport holders can make short visits without a visa. The conditions, such as the number of days, differ by agreement.
Angola has also announced plans to extend visa exemptions to more African countries, and some regional media report additions since 2023. Check the current list on the SME website or with the nearest Angolan embassy before you book. Do not rely on third-party lists.
Note: The exemption covers tourism only. It does not allow you to work, study or live in Angola. Business travelers should check which visa applies to their trip. If you will be employed in Angola, see our Angola work visa guide.
Conditions for visa-free entry
- Length of stay: up to 30 days per entry and no more than 90 days per calendar year.
- Passport: the decree requires a passport valid beyond your stay. Angolan missions and the SME commonly ask for at least six months’ validity and blank pages. Travel with at least six months left and several empty pages to avoid problems with airlines or at the border.
- Vaccination: an international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever (see below).
- Return or onward ticket and funds: border officers may ask for proof of onward travel, accommodation and enough money for your stay.
How to get a tourist visa if you are not exempt
If your country is not on the list, and you have no bilateral waiver (Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, for example, are not on the 2023 list), you need a tourist visa before you travel.
- Apply online. Use the SME’s e-visa service at sme.gov.ao. Be careful with look-alike websites that charge extra “service fees”.
- Prepare your documents. The SME’s English FAQ lists a scan of the passport data page, a photo with a white background, a valid international vaccination certificate and a round-trip flight booking. Upload files in the required size and format.
- Pay the fee. Fees change, so check the current amount and payment method on the SME portal.
- Complete consular steps if requested. For some nationalities and visa types, the SME notes that a visit to the consulate, with an interview and biometrics, may be required before the visa is granted.
- Travel and present your approval at entry. Most visitors arrive at Luanda’s Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport. Officers will check your passport, approval and vaccination card.
According to the SME, a tourism visa allows a stay of up to 30 days, which can be extended once for an equal period. It must be used within 60 days of being issued.
Health entry requirements
Yellow fever certificate
Angola requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from travelers aged 9 months or older, according to the UK’s NaTHNaC travel health service, which cites the International Health Regulations. Since 2016, the WHO has recognized the certificate as valid for life. Without a valid card, you may be refused entry or vaccinated at the border. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before you travel.
Malaria and other health advice
Malaria is present throughout Angola. Talk to a travel health clinic or your doctor 4 to 6 weeks before departure about prevention and other vaccines. Our guide on travel health for Angola covers vaccines, malaria and travel insurance.
Practical tips for arrival
- Cash rules: the US State Department notes a USD 10,000 (or equivalent) declaration limit when entering or leaving Angola.
- Money: foreign cards are not accepted everywhere. Read the Angolan kwanza explained before you travel.
- Safety: arrange airport pickup in advance, especially at night. See our guide Is Luanda safe?
- Keep copies: carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp, and keep the original secure.
- Overstays: staying beyond 30 days without an extension can lead to fines and problems on exit. Ask the SME about an extension before your permitted stay ends.
Many unofficial “Angola visa” websites look like government portals. The official immigration service is the SME (Serviço de Migração e Estrangeiros) at sme.gov.ao. Angolan embassies also publish requirements on their own sites.
Frequently asked questions
Do US and UK citizens need a visa for Angola?
Not for tourism. Both are on the Decree 189/23 exemption list and can stay up to 30 days per entry and 90 days per year. A yellow fever certificate is still required.
Can I extend a visa-free stay in Angola?
The exemption is for 30 days per entry, within a 90-day annual limit. If you need more time, contact the SME before your stay ends to ask about options.
Can I do business meetings on a visa exemption?
The decree covers tourist visas. Short business visits may be treated differently, so confirm with the SME or an Angolan embassy before traveling for meetings or conferences. Any paid work requires a work visa.
Is South Africa visa-exempt for Angola?
Yes. South Africans can visit Angola without a visa for short stays under a bilateral agreement in force since 2017. Check the current permitted length of stay before you travel.
How long does an Angola e-visa take?
Decree 189/23 sets a maximum of three working days for simplified tourist visa processing, and the SME FAQ mentions up to eight working days for short-stay visas. Apply at least two weeks before travel to be safe.
